Have to? Nope, Get To.
I hemmed and hawed over what to write this week.
This week didn’t flow easily like the others.
It felt like a chore and I had lots of excuses – ‘Too tired. Too busy. No good ideas.’
So on the back burner it went.
But then I remembered: I don’t have to write this newsletter.
I GET to write this newsletter.
Just like I GET to be a mom to my kids. I GET to be married. I GET to be an entrepreneur.
Those all feel like impossible chores some days, but the truth is I am choosing to do them. No one is making me.
That changes everything.
It’s the difference of feeling like someone forced to go on a trip versus intentionally moving into the driver’s seat.
I can still have feelings about it (no need to pretend otherwise or beat myself up for it).
Just like I don’t love paying taxes, cleaning my house, or cooking dinner for the billionth time.
They don’t feel like choices, but they are.
I choose to pay my taxes because I don’t want to go to jail. I clean my house because I love the way it feels. I choose to cook dinner because I love to eat good food with my family.
So I GET to write to you each Thursday. It’s a privilege to do so.
Try it for yourself. The next time you find yourself complaining that you “have to” do something replace it with “get to”. See what happens.
(You can still feel all the feelings, too.)
Let me know how it goes. Comment below – I always love to hear from you.
